Beware of these guns. Seems like David got the pick of the litter, while the rest of the litter dies as soon as you look at it. I ignored the bad reviews on Amazon. Silly mistake. Seems like they pack up with alarming regularity. Only posting here as it's one of the only reviews on YT for people researching before buying. Not David's fault in any way & I'm glad he has got on with his but I'd be inclined to make do with a Lidl special (which has far outlasted the Fatmax) and if it breaks, you can buy a new one for less than a tenner.

When i took the cones off my door after the cables snapped. The shaft on the left side came out of the bracket and the only way to get it in seems to be to torsion the spring. Is that correct? Seems sketchy tensioning the spring before i can even get new cones on

@dmgladden David, did you ever make a complete strip-down video for this DW988 as you mentioned at 14:20 in this video? I have one, it is not heavily used, only DIY, but today I discovered thast it will not select Hammer Mode - the ring I rotate to set the torque, will not go that last step to the Hammer symbol. Any idea if this is a common fault (and relatively easy to address) fault? Thanks, Pete.

great video however you should have a stop set in place to limit the forward movement of the top alternate bevel grind for both directions. this will ensure an even grind on all your tips for symmetry.also do not rotate the blade through the grinding action but rather simply press the tip onto the grinding wheel in a straight in and out action , in until you touch your stop and then back out again. it is best to set your stop to your worst tip and then bring every tooth to the same reference indexing point.

Thanks for the informative review. I currently have a Lidl Parkside gluegun which works OK but is semi-cordless (heats up on stand, then holds temperature for a while before you have to return to the stand). I don't use it very often as it is a pain to get onto the stand & heating. I would like to use hot glue more often as it is a useful tool, so I looked at this Stanley Fatmax. The Amazon reviews were mixed with a lot of people reporting faults but I guess most people only bother leaving reviews when they're super impressed or really dissapointed. Your review convinced me to take a punt (at £40). I hope mine works as reliably as yours has :)

Hi and thanks for the comment. One thing I have learnt since this video is in winter is that if the gun body is to cold it won't heat up at all it just keeps flashing so I just put it near a heater to warm the body, other than that I'm still very happy with it after all this time

@@dmgladden Top tip, thanks. I might keep it in the house during the winter & grab it when needed, as I tend to just leave the workshop cold & go out there in a padded boiler suit to save on the electric :) Mine arrived today & I used to to hold some hinges in place while I attached them, so already proving its worth.

Update on glue gun. 2 months after purchase and on it's second proper use (using less than one long glue stick) and the bloody thing has packed up :( The heating-up red light is not coming on & it doesn't appear to be getting hot. If your predicament is that of a frayed cable loop, and your frame is set between brick pilasters that prevent cone replacement without door removal, here is a quick and easy solution that works well: It requires a short length of 2mm cable and 2 x 2mm oval wire clamps (these still clamp old 1.5mm cable effectively). NB Estimate where to cut off the frayed cable loop very carefully - you probably have 130mm or less to accommodate the new arrangement. Cut a short length of new 2mm cable - 250 to 275mm should be sufficient. Form a new loop held by one of the oval clamps - one end of the cable will need to protrude enough for it to be held by the other oval clamp, along with the cut end of the old cable. Note that manufacturers/vendors of wire clamps warn against their being used for lifting operations and typically quote 50-70% of proof load. NB Be sure to check existing cable for serviceability. NB The use of such an arrangement on both sides of the door cannot be endorsed - do so at your own risk. Thanks for an informative post that has attracted some useful comments, especially preventative maintenance using an aerosol light lubricating oil.

Excellent! My mate just gave me a K4, because it kept 'cutting out', and he had to keep turning it on and off, for it to work. I've not had the need to use it, yet, and was wondering if it had the same problem? It works, then cuts out, the a quick turn on/off and it works, again.
